In a normal eye (emmetropia), light rays from a distance focus through the cornea and lens of the eye on the retina.

In a nearsighted (myopic) eye the rays focus in front of the retina.

In an astigmatic eye, light rays focus at two different points and the astigmatism can be myopic, hyperopic, or mixed.
